Maui Bloggers Network

Maui Bloggers Network General Guidelines:

1. Open to bloggers who
a. live on Maui has a blog about Maui
b. blog about other topics but lives on Maui (and Maui will benefit from the blog)
b. not live on Maui but blog is focused on Maui, Hawaii (will be assessed on a case to case basis)

2. The blog should be:
a. over 90 days old (I had made exceptions to those who's been active social media circle and seriously wants to learn how to blog. If a person just owns a static website but not active in soc. media, he/she has to abide by the "90 days blog age" requirement.)
b. open to comments (no exceptions on this - I will check each blog)
c. that are updated at least monthly (preferably more)
d. that are not password-protected
e. owned by you and not from a business you work for. If it's your own business website and you have a blog there, then it's ok.

3. Membership
a. by invitation.
b. by requesting to be a member
c. blog and Facebook Profile will be checked before being accepted.
d. only the admin can add members.

Etiquette:

1. Be Nice. The goal is to build is other up and not tear each other down. I suggest following the Thumper Rule "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all". Correcting or constructive criticism is ok but do it in a very tactful way and in private, with the goal to encourage and build up.

2. Be Generous. I say let's abide by the Golden Rule "Do unto others what you want others to do unto to you". Be generous in leaving comments on other member's blogs, and hope that they will return the favor, though don't be upset if they don't.
a. Aside from visiting blogs and leaving comments, don't hesiste to post links that you find that will be beneficial to bloggers.

4. Be Respectful and Sensitive. Political Views and Religious views and other hot topics that we are so passionate about should not be impossed on others.

Bog Hop (evolving - guideline are still changing, though we are on our 2nd month of doing this)

1. Once the monthly bloghop doc is up. you can link one blog post per blog of yours. one post per blog per month
2. List chronologically so we can find it easily.
3. To encourage commetns being left on the bog post itself and not the thread on the Facebook Page.

This morning I googled the words Maui Social Media and found that this blog is still on top of the list. I have not been updating this blog, but recently I am feeling the need to do that. There are many businesses on Maui who are jumping in the social media bandwagon and I feel the need to have a central place for reliable information on social media that the Maui Business Owners and Entrepreneurs can use.

Promoting And Growing Your Blog

I. Basics:

A. Know your goal in blogging

Personal Satisfaction - Expression of Creativity; Sharing Your Hobby or Passion; want to meet new friends, etc.
To Promote My Business - should still be passion related
Be A Professional Blogger - gain income through blogging *For 2 and 3 - your blogging standard would be higher: own URL; correct grammar and spelling; disclosures; site references, need a good web design.

B. Establish A Benchmark And Set A Growth Goal - where is your blog at in the beginning (or at this time

Where are you at:. Find out from: http://www.websitegrader.com/ / http://www.blograder.com/ / http://www.woorank.com/
What is your Page Rank with Google? Alexa Ranking?
Establish a short term goal. ex. increase daily visits by 3
Establish a long term goal. ex. 10,000 page views a month

C. Install An Analytic Tool in the Blog to help monitor growth

Stat Counter -
Google Analytics (most used by professionals)
Blog Rankings - Page Rank; TopBlogsites, etc.

II. Promotion and Growth

1. Know Basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Why? because Google will bring visitors to your blog.

The blog name you choose is important (ex. A Maui Blog)
How you Title your post is important (use Key Words - ex. Where to Eat On Maui)
Pictures / photos has tro be labeled and or tagged. (google images)
Tag Your Posts (For Google Searches)
Use key words - don't get carried away but don't neglect either
... and many more

2. Content is the King

Write interesting content (interesting to you and your reader; things you are passionate about). Be human. Sure key words are important but don't overdo it. Write with passion. Write with humor if you can (and it'd appropriate). Be technical only if it's a technical blog.
Write well - for blogs, it does not have to be too formal - it can be talk strory kind but following basic rules of punctuation, grammar and spelling is important. (my case...)
Length Matters. A 250 word post is good. If less, maybe add photos; if more decide into several posts. If not too long but long enough, chunk it, ot break up. Make lists. Highlight (bold) impt. words.
Words are good but adding photos, videos or slideshows greatly enhance the content and make the lay-out nice. Don't overdo.

3. Participate Actively in Social Media

Blogging Community

Find blogs related to your blog. (Technorati.com; AllTop; Google)
Read them and comment on it. Add them in your Blogroll. Subscribe in their feeds or e-mail newsletter.
Be friends with the other bloggers. Make an effort to get noticed by influential bloggers - be friends with them. LINKS are important.
Participate in Blog Carnival and Memes: Aloha Friday, Wordless Wednesday, Photo Hunt Saturday, Sunday Scribblings, Thankful Thursday, Weekly Winners (Photos) Capture It (photos)
Create some loyal commenters by replying on their comments.

Know Facebook Pages relevant to your blog. Engage there. If the administrator allows others to post on their wall, post relevant links to your blog. Do not overdo. Do this only when you already have established relationship with the owner of the page. ex. there are many existing MAUI pages on FB.

To Follow or Not To Follow - That Is The Question

Right now I have 5,560 followers and I am following 2,445

So what's your opinion about following and unfollowing?

Here's mine:

I follow people who tweet: 1) interesting tweets 2) informative tweets 3) fun tweets (those that make me LOL). Most of the time, the tweeples I follow tweet all those 3 kinds and I like that. In addition I follow Tweeples who 1) engage in conversation 2) RT once in a while 3) do not spam me with "here's how to make money on Twitter" kinda tweet or "buy this product" a million times.

I do not automatically follow and I hate those auto DM that thank me when I follow someone. I do not like auto DM. I usually check the profile of those who recently followed me, I check their tweets and if they are what I listed above, then I follow. Sometimes I do not follow a tweeple right away but when he or she @ me, I follow back because they "conversed". Of course when they spam me with "make money online tweets" I'd unfollow. I do not have a problem with Tweeples selling their products on line, promoting their books or blogs, or marketing some products. I am not naive - it's all part of the Twitterville. And I do it too. But I do not like it when Tweeples overdo it. It becomes annoying.

I follow some people who do not follow me. I respect their decision. I tweet a lot and some just don't like that, especially those who only follow a few. You see, if they only follow a few and I tweet a lot, all they would see is my face on their stream, and they get sick of me. So it's ok to unfollow me, and some of them just put me on their list. Some just don't like reading my "none value" tweets, they only like the informative tweets - that's fine too. I still follow them if they are worth following. And some I do not follow but put them in my list.

The other day I tweeted about my dislike of some singers who had tens of thousands followers and only follow 72 or so. I thought that was not balance at all. I know it's not good to follow everyone and be inundated with spam, but following too little in proportion to your follower is kinda unfair as far as I am concern. But oh well, that is a personal decision I guess.

Sometimes I miss a follower who @ me or do a #FF shout out. If you are one of them, tweet me @ and I'd follow you - but remember, I do not like spam tweets.

Some tweeples prefer a small group of following and followers. That's fine. I have some friends like that. Others amass thousands, but do not engage - that is not fine. I do not like those who accumulate thousands and ten thousands of followers using twitter feeds and other bot programs but they never interact at all.

For me, I like having a lot of followers and interacting with many. I think Twitter is more effective and enjoyable if you have at least 100 or more followers/following blah blah blah. But that's just my opinion.

Really, there are so many wonderful tweeples out there. We just need to decide what kind of tweets we like and follow those tweeters who tweet it.

Every now and then I see my follower list go down and I get worried. "Did I tweet something wrong?" "Did I offend someone?" But in the end it's probably someone who's offended that I didn't follow him/her back.

To follow or not to follow, that is the question ...

ReThink Hawaii - Hello Maui!

Re-Think: Hawaii. That was an experience. A catalyst.

I flew from Maui to Honolulu with great expectations. I was not let down. I had fun. I learned a lot. I was inspired.

Now it’s time to apply what I learned. Time to share the knowledge. Time to put a “do it” to it.

Initially, I was thinking of a “Re-Think(x): Maui” . A mini conference or workshop to echo Re-Think Hawaii. But as I think along, the concept of Re-Think Hawaii is not exactly what Maui needs at this time. We have to start with basics here. In my opinion, Maui’s participation with the Social Media is still on the infant stage. We need a Basic 101 course, an introduction. And so an idea is conceived. Perhaps a movement. And I am going to call it “Hello Maui”.

What exactly is Hello Maui? What I envision Hello Maui to be is a one day conference and workshops of basic courses that would enable Maui’s leaders and entrepreneurs to understand what Social Media is about and how to best participate in it. We will learn how to listen and how to engage. We will form networks, we will develop friendships.

And then we will see once again that which Christine Lu has said: "when good people get together, great things happen ".

I am putting an ad on the Maui Weekly. It's coming out next week Jan 22. I got a free 200 word write-up to go with my Ad. Here's what I wrote to promote A Maui Blog:

The Need To Focus

I feel the need to step back and "re-group". FOCUS - that's the thing I am working on. I need to focus. I have a thousand and one plans and ideas, but I need to focus. I need to prioritize, and focus on doing the most important one, lest I get too busy accomplish nothing on the long list of to dos.

FOCUS - sometimes it is really hard. One culprit is the "tyranny of the urgent". There are many of those in my life. The "I have to do it now" projects that cannot be neglected even though they are not as important as the other things I need to so.

FOCUS - I really need to exert an effort focusing. I think that's the message for today. FOCUS.

So... in the next few days you might find me using this blog as my thinking board as I plan and set my goals for the next year. I will also plan on how to accomplish these goals. Yeah, blog as my thinking board - that might work :)

Now I am excited. Next to Christmas, I like New Year. I like it because it brings hope, freshness and opportunity to start or re-build. I know sometimes we tend to get discouraged when we see that we've been writing the same "new years resolution" over and over again without accomplishing much of it - but it's not the reason to give up. It's the reason to be challenged - to say that this year it will be different! This year will be the day I will accomplish more!

Yes, this will be my year! Yeah!

You know that title is a positive thinking kind of thing, right? i found an article today at HomeBizBlogger about Monday Mornings and setting realistic goals:

Monday is a special day in the week. It’s the first day and technically anything is possible. (Same could be say for each day). As the week continues productivity has to be measured and if you haven’t completed some work the pressure starts to set in. Regardless if you planned 5 things to do or 50. If you look at them in percentages if you’re only accomplishing 20-40% of your tasks there will be some anxiety remaining. It doesn’t have to be like this.

I find it very easy to make grandiose plans of what will happen during the week. A “perfect world” set of things to do and accomplish. Sadly life doesn’t always work out as planned and things beyond our control occur which require our time. It’s also easy to make a list that is overzealous and come up incredibly short. I know I have done that on more than one occasion.

The secret to having a fun, productive week is setting realistic goals. My to-do lists used to be long. Now they are incredibly short. After sometime of trying to bite off more then I could chew I found I was choking. Nothing close to what I had imagined was getting done. There had to be some kind of remedy !?!

Reality Check and Other Musings

I should be folding our laundry right now ... but laundry can wait. There's been a lot of things in my head lately, I think I better "unload or download" so my mind does not get too crowded...

The other day I received my bonus check which in part is also my "separation pay". It is still unclear when my last day at work would be, and I am not complaining. I am taking it a day at a time, just giving it my best everyday....

On the homefront my husband and I are doing well. Actually, very well in spite of the pending "income cut back". He stopped asking me about finding another full time job, I stopped talking about wanting to be a "stay at home mom". Both of us are trying to understand the other's point of view and I think it's working. We've stumbled upon a great marriage tool which is not new, just hard to apply. At this point both of us are being understanding of each other and that makes the home atmosphere a lot better.

Have I mentioned that we've lost our renter on the ohana we have? (For those in the mainland, an ohana is an attached cottage that we rent to help pay for the mortgage. It's very common here on Hawaii). Our renter found a more inexpensive place (half the price of what he's paying, and it's ocean front I heard). We are praying that a new renter handpicked by God would come soon.

Reality Check. That's the title of the post that Darren wrote on making money with blogging. For those of you who do not know Darren, he's one of the more successful blogger who earns a lot of money from blogs. But he does not want to raise our hopes too high. Making money from blogs means hard work. And so although I enjoy blogging and hoped that it would be my source of income when I get laid off, the truth is I won't make as much money because if I work too hard on it, it would defeat the purpose or my original intent to stay at home to have more time with the kids and more time to be a "homemaker". I will continue to blog because I enjoy it, and I will continue to try to improve my A MAUI BLOG to hopefully monetize it well, but I am not holding my breath on it being a good source of income. If God makes it so then that would be wonderful but ... whatever happens, it's in God's hands...

Going back to the marriage secret, here's an example of how when we try to please our spouse, the end result is that they also try to please us:

In an effort to honor my husband, I attended this Women's Bible Study on being a good "HelpMeet". Some (or many) women at church do not like the class because it's almost like the wife is being taught how to be a doormat. The women leading the class are great, but the book we are using is not that great (in fact I would say it's terribly written). I think my husband appreciated the fact that I attended the class to be a better wife to him, that I can feel he's also trying to be a better husband to me. For example, yesterday he fixed our scanner. I had been wanting to fix this scanner (wasn't installed properly when we first bought our printer) but I could not find the time. When I asked him before, he didn't do it. But the other night, he spent a lot of time figuring it out and fixed it for me. (He even knows that I'll use the scanner to scan photos for my blog). Well, that spoke a lot because my love language happens to be "service". So that little service of his told me he loves me. So now watch out, there will be some old scanned photos appearing on this blog soon :)

A Little Miracle

Hubby is warming up to the idea of me doing some "blogging consultancy" work at home - at least for the time being while my real work is still slow and I have to take some unemployment. I am praying our new project takes off and I can just be part time again, but in the time being, when I get laid off, i can get unemployment while trying to start a business on internet marketing.

Don't Give Up Just Yet ...

Once in a while I would have this thought of just giving up my idea of "blogging for work at home job" idea. It just gets complicated when hubby is not really supportive of it. But then again I have so much passion for it, so much ideas, that I couldn't let those ideas go to waste. Internet Marketing and Social Networking is so necessary nowadays in order for a business to thrive or survive. My desire is to help the "small business" get into the band wagon. A lot of the small business owners on Maui are struggling right now and if I can just help them market and promote their stuff on the net - than that's a ministry in itself.

OK, I am not giving up this idea yet. I'm going to hop on the treadmill to get my once a week morning exercise and will "brainstorm" while I walk and run :)

There are many times this past weeks that I thought, "maybe I should just give up blogging altogether". There were some discouragements on the way (computer glitches and internet bad stuff), but after each discouragement, God seems to be providing some way out, so I am continuing on....

Let me expound on some of the discouragement and escape:

1. I found out that my former URL for A Maui Blog is now being used by a p*rn(*) site. I hated it. I was in great panic for a little while because somehow I think it's still associated with my name. Later I found out it's not really associated with my name anymore because I gave it up. I learned a lesson there. I also met a lady who is familiar with this scam and she's a real encouragement.

2. My e-mail (lizamaui) is compromised somehow because I got an e-mail from myself and that e-mail was selling something (buy 1 take 4 offer) and it was not from me! I had to e-mail people in my address book to warn them not to open that kind of e-mail in case they get one from my impostor. Bummers!

3. I met a computer expert who lives close to our house. he is a good consultant. It's good to know someone like him. I attended a seminar he offered for free. Great!

4. I met a gal named Cindy at Twitter, and she's from Maui! She has teh same passion for blogging and internet social networking like I do and she seems to be a very nice lady (from what I read from her tweets and blog). I e-mailed her and offered a partmership on the A MAui Blog. I have so many ideas for A Maui Blog but I do not have the time to implement them. Maybe with Cindy's help we can launch the AMB faster.

5. I had decided that last Tuesday will be my last day of attending the HelpMeet class. It's a great class but I just don't have the time to attend all the great classes. If I would be brutally honest, I was hoping that this class would help me convince my husband that I should stay home or at least work from home - but turns out I was told to submit to my husbands' "command" or "wishes". I know my hubby gets offended when I talk liek this - he says I ma making him like a "bad guy" forcing me to work outside of our home when in fact he is just seeing the big picture on our situation because he's the one paying the bills and he knows what we need for our family. Anyway, that said, I just want to emphasize thatmy husband is a wonderful husband. We just don't agree on this subject of "me working" but generally he is great.

6. I need to log off and start my exercise. I will hop on a treadmill and start my day right :)

Thoughts and Ramblings

It's been a roller coaster ride. Trusting God is really a matter of commitment beyond feelings. It's hard to explain what I am going through right now. Partly victorious, partly anxious, somewhat confident, somewhat in doubt, a little bit lonely, a little bit joyful... I know that tomorrow I would be more positive and upbeat. But tonight I am more sober and melancholic. I think I better end this post.

Encouraging Myself ...

I am trying to get my blogs prepped, to "monetize" it well while I am still employed, so that when I get unemployed it's both running smoothly and gaining paid ads regularly. But I do not know how long I can do this. Maybe I should just give up the idea and just find another "regular full time job" job as hubby said. I am soooo close and yet soooo far in achieving my desire to stay at home or at least work from home. Whatever Lord... whatever your will is ... just show me clearly, because right now, even though I know my role is to "submit" to my husband, I don't see how that would really work with me physically, psychologically and mentally. I am afraid I am going to burn out myself. But if it is Your Will, then you won't let me burn out.
